January Summary and recent 8th Grade Updates

Hi all,

My apologies for the lack of updates on the 8th grade house blog with news and events for you. At the start of January my second child, a little girl name Audrey was born. It has been quite an interesting month for me having my almost 3 year old boy Sam and baby Audrey to take care of! Updates will be more frequent from now on as I have survived the first month.

Updates for you:

1. DC Trip Payments: Final Payments for the DC trip were due to be made this past Monday February 3rd to WorldStrides. If you have not yet paid the remaining balance for the trip please do so as soon as possible as we cannot confirm/reserve a hotel room, meals, train ticket, etc. for your child until the balance is completely paid. You can check the balance online at the WorldStrides website. Payments on the remaining balance can be made online, by mail, or over the phone through their customer service line. Click below to access our DC Information Page on this Blog. If you are in need of financial assistance to cover any remaining balance you must contact one of the 8th grade house leaders as soon as possible to make arrangements for a "Tripship".

2. 8th Grade MLK Day: On Friday January 24th the 8th grade participated in a series of workshops facilitated from guests from different groups and organizations to look deeper at our house theme around justice. The purpose of this day was to teach kids how to move beyond the type of "We and They" thinking which creates stereotypes, prejudice, and racism. The guests who came were all great models of upstanders who have chosen to move beyond that type of thinking and share with us their stories of perseverance in the face of injustice.

All of our guest facilitators were so impressed with the students and their eagerness to participate, actively listen, ask questions and give their best in each workshop. We were grateful to have each of our guests with us on our MLK Day and all of the guests left saying how grateful they were to be able to work with the students.

This is a video we showed to the students at the end of the day which summarizes the workshops and the theme of 8th grade MLK Day.

3. Q2 Report Cards: 2nd quarter report cards went home with your child last Friday. If you have not done so please sign the form stating that you have seen the report card (either the hard copy or online on iParent) Students should return the signed confirmation to their homeroom teacher this week.

4. February Vacation: If your child is planning on missing school next week at any point leading up to February vacation please let your child's teachers and the main office know as soon as possible. Students should inform their teachers if they are having a planned absence as far ahead of time as possible so the arrangements in terms of classwork and homework can be made in a reasonable fashion.

5. School supplies: Thank you to those of you who were able to replenish school supplies for your child over the Winter Break. If you have not yet done so please check in with your child to see if they are low on the basic school supplies - pencils, pens and erasers. This is the time of the year when the supplies bought at the beginning of the school year have dwindled. Students who come to classes without pencils or pens often lose valuable "warmup and check in" time because they are looking around the room for something to write with.
